2005: "Self-Driving Cars"

Forecast: In 20 years (2025), self-driving cars will be on the streets. They will appear across various stages of development. At the outset, major automobile producers will develop assistants that will completely take over the task of parking. Autopilots will choose the best route and will automatically avoid traffic jams — should these continue to exist in the connected world of the future constantly monitored by satellites. The autopilot, naturally, will also automatically handle speed control. Should we shut off these automated systems for a time, the vehicle's electronics will continue to monitor us, suggesting – as an example – breaks when we get tired or lose concentration. Because later fully autonomous models will free us from having to steer, shift gears, man the clutch, or brake, we will be free to concentrate on other things during the ride home. Status today: Today the industry is taking major steps towards self-driving cars. Automatic parking assistants have already become standard features of mid-range models. And many of today's (2016) vehicles are impossible to imagine without navigation systems, speed-limit controls, break reminders, and automatic fatigue recognition. The first entirely self-driving cars have already been presented at major trade fairs. The "autopilot" button for simple traffic situations (traffic jams, convoy traffic up to 30 mph) is already a reality in some of today's luxury models. It will make its way into the mass market by 2020. Entirely autonomous cars (which can drive themselves from start to destination, including complex traffic situations), remain predicted for 2025 today.
