April 11-12, 2018
The world of commerce faces gigantic upheaval. Even today, logistics and material handling are increasingly being tasked to robots while delivery channels undergo major decentralization. Startups are working feverishly to create a form of "self-driving commerce" that analyzes individual customer desires through AI and uses this basis to commission and commence custom-tailored production for the corresponding products.
Retail in the age of unlimited points of sale and lot size 1
Technological developments in the field of human-machine communication are a constant reminder that virtually every object and every conversation may soon be transformed into a point of sale. Hardware and software providers are redefining the logic of commerce with all the energy they possess, making it easy for us to be acquired or activated virtually any time, any place, and by any means of communication.
Fueled by the smartphone revolution, e-commerce has sustainably altered consumers' purchasing behavior. Fewer and fewer customers accept standardized products. Manufacturers' ability to satisfy the desire for individualized products is increasingly becoming the decisive criteria for competitiveness. Predictive analytics can already tell us with unbelievable accuracy what a potential customer will want.
Thus while the number of touch points is increasing faster than we can say "channel," the number of identically produced products is falling just as rapidly. Every retail company feels challenged by a double paradigm shift that has shaped its business models, processes, and employee behavior for decades.
What else will consumers expect from us? How do we make mass customization possible in order to produce and distribute products with a lot size of one? How do I connect stationary trade with omnichannel strategies? Does channel distribution still make sense? How will employees in stationary trade be able to harness the power of the information that AI is giving them? How can I fill the interfaces that are important for my product placement? How do I align my marketing efforts to convince my customers' AI assistants of the benefits of my products?
These topics and questions are the focus of the first session of our "Rethink Retail" think tank, which will take place on April 11 and 12 in Leipzig, Germany. With 30 participants and speakers, we will spend two days not only designing future scenarios for the commerce of tomorrow, but will also use this knowledge to overcome existing problems using the solutions of tomorrow.
We are extremely excited about answering these questions together with you and other participants. Together, we want to develop visions for the future world of retail in the setting of a dedicated think tank. This think tank will be a neutral platform for companies in the DACH region where future trends and strategies can be discussed and developed into joint projects. As a member of our think tank, we invite you join us twice per year for a one-and-a-half-day think tank session. The result of these meetings will be concrete projects that are then realized by think tank members.
